Are video cards interchangeable?

I have an Intel 946G2, chip type GMA 3000 on my computer. I would like to upgrade for faster processing and to play some newer games.

Do I have to make sure the new video card I choose is of a particular type and make, or is the connection standardised, ie interchangeable no matter the maker?|||The slots for graphics are generally AGP or PCI Express. with an Intel 946 chances are about 99% that you have a PCI Express slot (which is good because it is the current standard. AGP went out of date 4-5 years ago.)



That is all you really need to know. The manufacturer and brand of the card don't matter much just look for something with the PCI Express interface.



I recommend looking at www.newegg.com. Depending on how much you want to spend they have a variety of options, and their prices can't be beat!!

Newegg and look at the photos of mobo's, after looking at the spects to see one each of the boards with either of the slots so you can look on yours to see which one you have...then choose the card that fits yours...hint...on Newegg you can "advanced search" (on the mobo page) and put in AGP as a spec and they will only show mobo's with that slot...same with PCI Express|||It doesn't matter who made your computer. It's all about the motherboard. You have to find out what type of video card your motherboard will support. |||Just check the interface PCI Express or AGP.
